Measuring your home's staircase for a stair lift installation is easy. We'll go through the steps below, but first here are two guidelines that will make sure your measurements are as accurate as possible: 1 - Always measure twice. 2 - When in doubt, call one of our stair lift experts.
Step 1 Let's measure the total length of your staircase first. Place the end of your tape measure at the edge of the top landing and pull it out along the edges of the stairs until you reach the bottom landing. Be careful not to let the tape measure sag in between stairs. | Step 2 Next, we will measure the length of the staircase from the top landing to the bottom step. Place the end of your tape measure at the edge of the top landing and pull it out along the edges of the stairs until you reach the bottom stair. Be careful not to let the tape measure sag in between stairs.
Step 3 Here we will measure the width of your staircase. Only measure the width that can be used. In other words, if the stairs extend beyond a set of rails on one or both sides, don't include the extra width on the other side of the rail or rails. | Step 4 We will find out how much space you have available at the bottom of your stairs here. Just measure from the end of the bottom step to the wall, door, or other obstruction on the other side of the landing.
